Five of the eight casinos we review hold an MGA licence. Here is exactly what it obliges them to do, how to verify it, and where its protection stops.

The Malta Gaming Authority is the European Union’s largest online gambling regulator, and its licence is the most common one held by operators serving Canadian players. Here is what it actually requires.
Your balance must be held separately from the operator’s working capital. If the company fails, player money is not part of what creditors can claim. This is the most consequential protection in the licence and the one least often mentioned.
Random number generators must be tested by an approved laboratory, and a game’s published return to player must match its measured behaviour. This is why the same Pragmatic Play or Play’n GO title returns the same percentage at every casino carrying it — the certification attaches to the game, not the operator.
Deposit limits, loss limits, session reminders, time-outs and permanent self-exclusion must be available and functional. An operator cannot make self-exclusion hard to reach or route it through a support request.
Anti-money-laundering rules require the operator to confirm who you are before releasing funds. This is why a first withdrawal takes longer than later ones — and why completing verification when you open the account removes the delay entirely.
If the casino’s own support fails to resolve a dispute, the MGA accepts player complaints directly and publishes how the process works. That is a genuine escalation route, and it is more than an unlicensed operator offers.
An MGA licence does not give you a Canadian regulator. The process runs in Malta, under Maltese procedure, and no provincial authority can act on your behalf. It is meaningfully better than no licence and meaningfully less than the protection an AGCO-registered operator provides to Ontario players. Both statements are true, and a page claiming otherwise is selling something.
Beazt, Wildz, Caxino, Spinz and Wheelz — the five Rootz brands. Speedz, Berriez and Flamez hold a Kahnawake licence instead.
It is the strongest of the offshore licences commonly held by casinos serving Canada, requiring segregated funds, audited games, functional self-exclusion and a published complaints route. It is not equivalent to Canadian provincial regulation, which is a separate and stronger protection available only through AGCO-registered operators in Ontario.
Find the licence number in the site footer — a badge without a number means nothing — then search the operator on the MGA’s public licensee register and confirm the licence is active and that the domain you are using is listed among the approved ones. A licence held by a related company for a different brand does not cover the site you are on.
It can accept and adjudicate a complaint against a licensee, which is a real remedy and more than an unlicensed site offers. It cannot act as a Canadian consumer authority, and the process is conducted in Malta rather than in your province.
Playing at a licensed offshore casino is not an offence for the player anywhere in Canada — the Criminal Code targets operators. Ontario runs its own regulated market through iGaming Ontario and the AGCO, and none of the five MGA casinos we review is registered there.
When selecting an online casino, consider factors such as licensing and regulation by UKGC, a diverse selection of games from trusted software providers, secure payment methods, responsive customer support, and positive player reviews. Ensuring casinos take cyber security seriously can also protect your personal and financial information.
